Support Pollination and Fruit Development

No bees, no melons — it's that simple. Watermelon plants produce separate male and female flowers on the same vine; the female flower has a tiny fruit swelling behind the bloom, the male doesn't. Avoid spraying any insecticide during bloom, even a labeled one, since that's exactly when pollinators are working the flowers.

If bee activity looks thin in your yard, you can hand-pollinate by transferring pollen from a male flower to a female one with a small brush, early in the morning while flowers are open. Once fruit sets, leave only 2–4 per plant for best size — a vine trying to ripen eight melons at once gives you eight mediocre ones instead. Set fruit up on straw, cardboard or a mulch pad to keep it off wet soil and prevent rot on the underside.

Once you're done for the season, remove old vines and mulch, and compost only the healthy plant material — anything showing mildew or rot goes in the trash, not the bin, since a home compost pile doesn't reliably heat up enough to kill those pathogens before you spread it back on next year's beds.

Can I reuse plastic mulch the following season?

I generally don't — by the end of a season mine is torn from wind and UV exposure, and reusing it can carry over disease spores from the previous crop. If yours looks intact and you rotate crop families, a light rinse and careful storage can stretch it one more year, but new mulch each season is the safer default for disease control.

Do I really need drip irrigation, or will overhead watering work?
